can a hypertensive person excercise? I am 44 and would like to to build muscles. is it ok?

I am 44, male, weigh 154 pounds. I am hypertensive, otherwise i am a healthy individual. my doctor advised me to walk and jog and not to do excercise with weights. Is it ok to work on small weights to strenghthen muscles and keep muscles toned?

    They reason he doesn’t want you to exercise with weights is because he doesn’t feel like your heart needs to be exerted in a strenuous way at the time. I bet, after time, you will get the green light to do this but your doctor wants to make sure your in good physical condition first.
