hypertension, an exercise in person? I have a 44 and want to build muscles. Okay?
I am 44, male, weigh 154 pounds. I am hypertensive, otherwise i am a healthy individual. my doctor advised me to walk and jog and not to do excercise with weights. Is it ok to work on small weights to strenghthen muscles and keep muscles toned?

They reason he doesn’t want you to exercise with weights is because he doesn’t feel like your heart needs to be exerted in a strenuous way at the time. I bet, after time, you will get the green light to do this but your doctor wants to make sure your in good physical condition first.

High blood pressure is not an absolute contraindication to weightlifting, but it should be done with caution. It also depends on how well your blood pressure is controlled normally. If you have well controlled blood pressures (< 140/90) then it may be possible for you to weight lift and not have any problems. If your blood pressure is not well controlled, then you should avoid weightlifting since it could raise the blood pressure to dangerous levels.
