? I can smoke while taking propranolol due to tachycardia?
My tachycardia is not very serious, but I’m on propranolol for 5 months now and have to take it till January. I haven’t been drinking or smoking, but I kind of miss smoking so I wanna know if it will make me any worse if I had one cigarette.
I don’t know what is it prescribed for, but I use it for tachycardia and it does make my blood pressure lower and I feel sleepy sometimes. I hope it won’t make a big damage if I had one cigarette from time to time.

There has been some research done on the effects of smoking while taking propranolol. The general consensus is that it interferes with the action of the drug. It is five times more addictive than marijuana. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and has a direct effect on the central nervous system. It tends to increase your heart rate and blood pressure. Before all the lawsuits the “insiders” in the tobacco industry use to refer to cigarettes a “nicotine delivery system”. All that being said, if you find it impossible to kick the habit, an occasional cigarette is not going to kill you. Note that effectiveness of propranolol tends to decrease with prolonged use. It may be a good idea to keep tabs on your blood pressure on a regular basis.
I took propranolol for the tachycardia, also. Pb lowered my too much so I had to stop. The problem with tobacco addiction is that the whole ” a cigarette from time to time ” plan easily will become a habit to smoke full-time. In fact, the worse thing than probably is going to happen (in the short term) is that you can feel navigated by the mixture of the arterial pressure loss and lack of oxygen. In the long term risk of development the' re to run a habit that, inevitably, is going to destroy its health.
If you’re taking propranolol for high blood pressure, then you should not smoke. AT ALL.
If you’re taking the drug for high heart rate due to anxiety, then it may not be all that bad as long as your doctor advises so.
If you HAVE to take to propranolol then you should probably not smoke until your heart condition is under control.
Also, let your prescribing doctor know about your side effects. Maybe he can help to lower to dosage or switch to another beta blocker like atenolol.
